Restoring a Popular Woodland Walk

Severe winter storms in early 2025 caused extensive damage along a popular section of the Lough Derg Way at Ballydrinan, bringing down large numbers of trees and making the trail unsafe for use. Funding secured through the Walks Scheme Development Fund enabled the removal of fallen trees, repairs to damaged sections of the trail surface and the replacement of broken stiles. These works allowed the route to reopen safely and restored access to a well-used woodland walk enjoyed by both local people and visitors. The project demonstrates the importance of investing in trail maintenance to ensure that walks in Tipperary remain accessible, safe and enjoyable throughout the year.

“The storm damage was devastating, not just for the trail but for local forestry owners too. I was delighted to see the route reopened so quickly, ensuring walkers could once again enjoy this beautiful section of the Lough Derg Way.” – Marie Seymour, Landowner
