Recipes for Health: Traveller Women Stir Up Skills and Confidence
In 2024, our Traveller Health Care Project facilitated two Healthy Food Made Easy (HFME) programmes, engaging 20 Traveller women in a series of hands-on, practical sessions. Over six weeks, the women came together each week for 2.5 hours and learned about the Food Pyramid, healthy choices, cooking on a budget, sugar intake, salt intake and food hygiene practice, all based on current guidelines. Participants shared tips, swapped recipes, and tried out simple, healthy meals together in a relaxed setting. Many commented on how useful and surprisingly fun the experience was.
“I really enjoyed coming into the group every Tuesday morning. We made lovely food and we tasted different types of food” – Attendee
The HFME underpins the goals and work of the THCP to promote healthy lifestyles and bring awareness to the issues that are affecting Traveller Health. This engagement with HFME reflects the Traveller Health Care Project’s commitment opening up access to health information in ways that are relevant and practical, and that can respond meaningfully to the specific health needs of Travellers.
