In partnership with the HSE Traveller Community Health Team, South Tipperary Development Company (STDC) is seeking a Traveller Community Wellbeing Awareness Worker
The aim of this post is to promote positive mental health and inform people of mental health supports when required. This post will be supported by the Traveller Mental Health Coordinator and the Traveller Health Nursing Team. The post is part of the South East Community Healthcare 5-year National Traveller Health Action Implementation Plan which aims to support and improve Traveller mental health across the region.
Training and support for this post will be provided.
The purpose of the post will be:
- To work as part of the Primary Healthcare for Travellers Project in promoting positive Mental Health and Wellbeing with Traveller Men and Women.
- To work with other professionals in promoting the service to the Traveller community in a way that will build trust and positive relationships.
- To work with Mental Health support services that are available for the Traveller community.
- To identify the Mental Health needs of Travellers and participate in community-based projects to develop a response to those needs.
- To advocate for and represent the voice of Travellers by attending relevant health service meetings.
- To attend relevant training courses and participate in training that would develop personal skills to support this role.
- To support Travellers to participate in Mental Health and Wellbeing initiatives and programmes.
Requirements for the Post:
- A member of the Traveller community as the Traveller Community Wellbeing Awareness worker position is a peer lead post.
- Have good literacy and basic IT skills.
- Have a good understanding of Traveller issues, particularly in relation to Traveller Mental Health and Wellbeing and the issues which impact on health.
- To participate in monthly regional training for the post and engage in additional training when required.
- To demonstrate good verbal and written communication, interpersonal and group work skills.
- Be able to work on your own initiative as a lone worker and as part of a team.
- Have access to transport and hold a clean driving licence.
- To provide reports on the work carried out as this is a pilot programme.
Contract: This will be a 12-month fixed term contract
Hours of work: Hours of work will be 13 hours per week based around 4 days depending on the needs of the service which will be determined by the coordinator. Flexibility will be required.

Location of the Post: This post covers the area of South Tipperary. The Primary Health Care for Travellers Project (PHCTP) is based in Clonmel.
